An epidermal compound which inhibits melanin formation was describedby Rothman et al in 1946. Evidence indicating that this compoundis reduced glutathione is presented. The concentration of thiscompound of glutathione reductase is higher in white epidermisthan Negro epidermis. The implications of these findings inundersting the control of human pigmentation are discussed.

早在1946年罗斯门等就提出能阻断皮肤黑色素形成的一些物质，实验证实这个物质就是还原型的谷胱甘肽。谷胱甘肽及谷胱甘肽还原酶在浅肤色人中的含量高于较黑肤色的人种。根据实验结果，本文讨论如何调节皮肤的色素含量。
